Our Remote Area Medical Management course is a 7-day advanced level course which is designed to expand the suite of skills and knowledge available to those who already have training in the field of Pre-Hospital Care. The course is suitable for Doctors, Paramedics, EMT’S, Nurses, Expedition Leaders, Close Protection Medics and those providing medical support for the exploration (oil, gas and mineral) sectors and media medical cover as well as those operating independently in remote and hostile environments.

Students and charities may be eligible for a 10% discount.

Prerequisites apply - students are required to have an in-date FREC 3 qualification or other advanced First Aid certificate to attend this course. The course includes numerous case studies, indoor and outdoor (including night time) scenarios.

These scenarios include everyday incidents and also those likely to be encountered in wilderness, remote/hostile environments.

The course requires pre-reading. Two manuals are provided, a Royal College of Surgeon’s (Edin) manual and our own R.A.M.M™ manual. 

Day One Subjects Include:
    • Initial assessment of pre-course reading
    • Scene assessment and initial triage methodology
    • Risk assessment
    • Airway assessment : Supraglottic airway devices/ Bag Valve Mask use/suction
    • Consent
    Day Two Subjects Include:
    • History taking for respiratory system
    • Review anatomy/physiology of respiratory system
    • Respiratory system assessment (auscultation/percussion (IPPA – inspect, percuss, palpate, Auscultate)
    • Respiratory system common complaints
    • Respiratory system traumatic injuries
    • Drug interventions for respiratory system
    Day Three Subjects Include:
    • History taking for cardiovascular system
    • CVS assessment
    • A/P review for CVS
    • Use of NIPB assessment and interpretation
    • Capillary Refill Test and Pulse
    • Common CVS complaints /assessment and treatment/ common drug interventions
    • Catastrophic haemorrhage/ tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
    • IV/ cannulation/fluid replacement
    • Legal consideration, Hazards and risks of IV/
    • IO fluids
    • IO use of the FAST 1, EZIO needle
    • Burns and scalds
    Day Four Subjects Include:
    • History taking for Nervous system
    • A/P review for nervous system
    • Nervous system assessment
    • Common NS complaints, assessment and treatment/drug intervention
    • ENT assessment, complaints and treatments
    • Traumatic head injury – assessment and treatment rationale
    • Toxins and poisons
    • Spinal injury management/Road Traffic Collision/rapid vehicle extrication drills
    Day Five Subjects Include:
    • History taking for Muscoloskeletal system
    • A/P review for MS system
    • MS system assessment/Percussion
    • Common MS complaints, assessment and treatment/drug intervention
    • Traction splints/ POP back-slabs/immobilisation
    • History taking for GI/GU system
    • A/P review for Gi/GU system
    • Gastro Intestinal/Genitourinary system assessment/Percussion
    • Common Gi/GU complaints, assessment and treatment/drug intervention/ antibiotics/pain relief/urinalysis
    • Diabetes – assessment/recognition and management
    • Wound closure / glue, suture, staple
    • Dermatology – rashes, bites and stings Injections
    • Medications - use, contraindications and legal issues
    Day Six Subjects Include:
    • Pre-mission planning/intelligence
    • Bugs and creepy crawlies, bites, stings & treatment
    • Telemedicine
    • People factors and critical incident debriefing

    Day Seven Subjects Include: 
    • Scenarios
    • Course Exam
    • Assessments
    • Course dispersal
